This week in Year 6, our writing lessons were inspired by Rose Blanche, a powerful story set in Germany during World War II. The story follows a young German girl, who after following a group of soldiers, makes a shocking discovery: a concentration camp hidden on the outskirts of her town. As we read the story together, the children explored Rose's thoughts, feelings and emotions at different points in the narrative. The children showed great maturity and empathy as they considered how Rose might have felt when she first noticed the soldiers, when she discovered the camp and as she reflected on the reality of what was happening around her. Using these discussions to support their writing, the children then wrote diary entries in the role of Rose. I was extremely impressed with how the children used questions, emotive and informal language to capture Rose’s confusion, curiosity and sadness. Amazing work Year 6!
