The Iron Man is causing no end of trouble for the villagers and farmers. We’ve looked at how author’s build up an atmosphere of tension, describing an approaching threat and we’ve had a go at creating our own piece of atmospheric writing. Ask your child what kind of strange creature they created for their story. Hopefully, you’ll hear some great adjectives too when they describe their character.

In Geography we are finding out about different settlements. We know the difference between a hamlet, a village, a town and a city and that Willington is a town, with shops, schools, churches, health care places, and so on. When we looked at a map of Willington we could see the river, we identified different roads and looked at how land is used in our area, with the industrial estate, farmland and residential areas easy to spot. If you’re out and about have a chat about the physical and human features you can see around you and imagine how these might look on a map.

We’re now comparing the Neolithic period of the stone age to the earlier stone age times, talking about how the lives of these early people developed as their skills and knowledge improved and they began to work together in a simple society much more like the one we know today. Ask your child why Neolithic people didn’t need to hunt as much as they used to, and about the changes to where they lived.

Ask your child about different types of skeletons. They will be able to tell you about endoskeletons, exoskeletons and hydrostatic skeletons and match some animals to each of these. We know about vertebrates and invertebrates and we are starting to name some of the bones in our own skeleton.

I can not yet say much about the “ P “ word experience, other than it’s done. I’m still in recovery. Please see for yourself how well the children did making their own “paint” from different spices and water. Whilst I don’t think Dulux have too much to worry about in the way of home decorating, they all did a remarkable job with their prehistoric “cave – art” masterpieces. I’ve even put some on the wall.
