We would like to introduce Chase the dog, St. Stephen’s CE Primary’s new school pet!
As many of our parents and pupils may be aware, Chase belonged to Mrs Richardson’s aunt who sadly, recently passed away in sudden and unexpected circumstances. Chase is now living with Mrs Richardson and although he is receiving all the love and care a dog could need, he is still missing his mammy very much and is not coping with being left alone in the house. Chase will therefore be coming to school every day with Mrs Richardson and will become our school ‘well-being’ dog. Chase just loves attention and affection so we feel that welcoming him into our school family will be the best thing for him.
Evidence indicates that having a school dog can have many benefits and we have sent all parents an email with full details.
Chase is a Bedlington Terrier, so has an excellent temperament and is hypoallergenic and does not shed. He is fully socialised and well-trained.
Obviously, bringing any animal into school is not something to be approached lightly, both for the animal’s sake and for the sake of the children and adults in the school. We have discussed the practicalities, including everything from risk assessments and insurance to dealing with training, doggy toileting and children’s allergies. We have completed a full risk assessment and have a school dog policy.
It is our long term aim that all children across the school will, in time, have opportunities to have contact and quality time with Chase and it would be helpful to know whether we have any children who are allergic to dog hair, or who have a particular phobia concerning dogs. We can assure you that Chase will not be around the school off the lead, but it is sensible to be aware of everyone’s needs.
